#4. The Underpainting

At this point you can start to see the picture develop!
I am going to create an "underpainting" that is monochromatic (one color).
When you create an underpainting and then glaze color over it, that approach is called an "indirect method". Instead of black and white I am using brown, and letting the ground show through.
There are various styles of "Indirect Painting" the two most notable styles are the "Venetian" and the "Flemish". Many people understand this better than I do, but as I understand them, the main difference is that "Flemish" painters used transparent darks, and the Venetians created opaque underpaintings. I am starting with a "Flemish" approach. Notice how the darks are still transparent? The golden tone is still visible through the paint.
We'll see what happens as we go... I am trying something new here.
